The Frederick Basket Company is a small local gourmet, and gift shop.  We’re HUGE supporters of local business, and love finding locally made dips, sauces, and brews to fill our shop, and your baskets. We here at the Frederick Basket Company want to give a shout out to our friends at Baltimore BBQ Company. They have amazing, locally made BBQ sauces, and a heartwarming success story.  Here’s how they got started:
From Don Fisher, owner, Baltimore BBQ:
“Adam and I met about 4 years ago. Our wives were pregnant at the same time and we were looking for a nanny. A mutual friend introduced us and the nanny. At the first meeting, Adam noticed I had the same exact Weber smoker in my backyard that he did. Turns out, we were also fraternity brothers (at different colleges) and shared an affinity for bourbon and golf. It was friendship at first sight! :)
We started to cook BBQ together as our families grew closer and decided to enter the MD State BBQ Championships in Bel Air in 2011. We entered into the professional division to see how good we really were…we finished in the middle of the pack out of about 70 teams. We competed the next two years for fun (finishing as high as 12th place for brisket) and we started making our own sauce….
Along the way, our friends and family raved about the food, especially the sauce…they were constantly telling us to make more so they could bring some home after our backyard cookouts. Our sauce was (is) different – it isn’t a replication of a Texas, Kansas City, or Memphis style sauce. It is truly unique to Baltimore. Everything is local and natural. In 2014, we decided to take a chance and see if we could put Baltimore on the national BBQ map.
We produced our first “batch” at a local manufacturing/bottling company, Mama Vida, in May of 2014. Our dream had become a reality. We hoped to sell out of our first 1,600 bottles by year-end (7 months). Turns out our sauce was just as popular with other Baltimoreans – not just our friends. We sold out in about 3 weeks. Keep in mind we have full time jobs (Adam is an attorney at Venable, and I work for T. Rowe Price), so we have had to do BBQ on the side (evenings and weekends).
Fast forward 12 months to today – we have produced around 30,000 bottles of sauce, we have added a third style (Black Raven), we are sold in approximately 30 retail locations, we have hired a distributor and online fulfillment vendor, and we are on the menu at a number of different restaurants, including Miss Shirley’s. In addition, we took 2nd place at the American Royal in Kansas City (the world series of BBQ), and have been featured in Baltimore Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, Fox 45 morning news, etc. Baltimore is on the BBQ map now.
Quite a first year!!!
We love stories like these— and find so many just like them in the surrounding Baltimore area. We are featuring Baltimore BBQ Company sauces in out Father’s Day Gift Baskets.
